I recently poked around on Google Earth while I was bored. I happened to land in Marseilles, a port city on the southern Mediterranean coast of France. The makeup of cars on its streets was distinctly French, but there were a few surprises.

I poked around long enough to make four parts! Here are the first three:

There were quite a few interesting Ka s present, and this strangle little Ford is no exception.

What is this oddly proportioned coupe? The designers seemed to have the goal of producing the least amount of usable interior room possible. It looks like some sort of Peugeot.

Ooh, Z4 coupe. Are the coupes as rare abroad as they are in the US? Even the convertibles are scarce on the ground where I live.

I almost didn’t see this little Jeep in the swarm of oversized crossover thingies. It almost looks small compared to that (Nissan Quasquai?) behind it.

I don’t know why, but the extremely geometric designs of late 2000s Renaults just do it for me. I cannot make out the model, but that tall curved roof and long flat trunk just please the eye. The sandy beige color is also eye catching in a sea of monochromatic hatchbacks.

See what I mean? I can’t imagine the Renault Megane was particularly space efficient in the back, but the design feels so avant garde.

This is probably just an appearance package, but I like the contrast. And is it missing a white square on the front right corner of the roof?

The white Peugeot coupé is a RCZ.

The Renault coupé is a Megane Coupé Cabriolet.

Coupe is a cup, like in “world cup”, not a car.

The white Peugeot’s an RCZ. The SUV thin gie behind the Jeep is a current model Peugeot 5008 (or possibly a 3008, it’s hard to distinguish them from that angle). The brown Mégane is a CC, a coupé/convertible where the roof folds up under that very flat rear end.

That generation Z4 only came with a retractable hardtop, so they’re all “coupes” or “convertibles depending when you see ‘em

Whenever I see this I can only think of the segment on Top Gear where they tried to get this to match a Lancer Evo’s lap time around the TG track.

Still kills me how they ruined one - even when that show aired, I thought “you’ll regret that”.  Eventually they will be a relatively scarce collectible.
